We Found Kuthulu
Emergency Report to UN-EDF HQ. 2033.
We thought that Hyper Space was empty, except for some radiation and various particles. No planets or peoples. We were wrong. There are things lurking in H-Space. Large horrible things that can destroy star ships. This is no joke.
Our normal scanning systems do not detect them. You literally have to look out the observation dome and see them. Of course then you will wish you had not. We do not yet know why they are invisible to normal detection systems. What we do know from a survivor's report is that they are "Kuthulu like" in their strangeness and hideousness. Also that they are dangerous, very dangerous.
It is possible that some of the dozen ships which have gone missing over the years have been destroyed by these creatures. What we do know is that even if their intentions are not hostile, their actions can be damaging to our ships. As for their level of intelligence, that is unknown.
The survivor's report reads in part; "The creature seemed curious about the ship. Grasping us with one of many tentacles. Crushing the outer hull and damaging several systems. It looked at the ship with a hundred eyes, before shaking us about like one would do with a can of soda pop. And the sound, it vibrated right through us, like some pulsing chant. I dont know if it was trying to communicate or what, but I pray I never hear that sound again. Then it suddenly let us go. I have no doubt it could have ripped the ship in half with ease."
Addition to Report.
The Ambassador to the Lizard-men confirms the existence of these hyper space creatures. They have supplied us with a data file containing what little they know about the monsters. "I thought you knew, that is one of the dangers of FTL travel." the Saurian diplomat said.
After a brief review of the file, there are three critical facts to report. 1. In the last 1000 years, the Saurian estimate 400 ships have been lost to the Kuthulu like creatures. A rather low number considering the amount of ship traffic. 2. In the 7 recorded battles between ships and creatures, no measurable damage was inflicted on them, even though all the best weapons were used. The ships survived because of luck not because they drove the creatures off. 3. There is one verified report of a creature that followed a ship out of H-Space. It terrorized a solar system for a few years. Destroyed all ships sent against it, then one day just vanished.
Dr Ward's Warning.
Not long after the first ships started making trips through hyper space, crew members started reporting strange, often horrific, dreams. Dr Ward who was assistant medical chief of the project began keeping a careful log of these reports. He even issued a standing order that crew note down any dreams they can recall having in H-Space. He spent several years accumulating data before issuing his Doom Document.
Ward's report claimed that similarities between dreams were significant beyond any statistical possibility. They focused on images of Kuthulu like creatures and strange ideas of moving without the need to move at all. But most disturbing was the repeating theme of the things falling out of rips in space to land on Earth.
Naturally Ward's report was set aside as "valid but not practically useful" and he was given a small budget to continue his research as part of the mental health in H-Space division. He worked for several more years before mysteriously vanishing.
